XERA

baseball, math, baseballmath, sabermetrics, baseball stuff, XERA, baseball stats, baseball statistics
The main purpose of this blog is to supply useful baseball information to fans everywhere. We invite you to check out the free website, http://www.xera-baseball.com/ to check out XERA - Baseball's Statistical Scouting Report. We think that XERA (eXpected Earned Run Average) is the best statistical method to evaluate baseball talent. We're biased, of course, because the XERA procedures were developed by Dwight Gill, the statistician who "owns" this blog. That's why we offer AL and NL total league stats for each of the last 50 years, and compare them, side-by-side with XERA "estimates" of productivity. The Rays (2008) and Mets (starting in 2004, until Jim Duquette left) have used XERA data and formulas to evaluate talent.

XERA is based on a normal distribution of a player's (or team's) standard stats. It uses readily available stats, and evaluates pitchers and hitters by the same standards - ERA, and hits/walks/strikeouts/homeruns per game (9 IP) for HITTERS, and Batting/Slugging/On Base averages (and OPS) for PITCHERS. Each player receives a "grade" (A through F) for his performance in several categories - all based on objective facts, no subjective judgement.

There are many pages of statistical and other information at http://www.xera-baseball.com/. You're welcome to peruse everything there. Dwight would appreciate your opinions on XERA and the website in general - good or bad, in order to develop an outstanding baseball site. You can reach him at xerastats@gmail.com.
