Of the post-1899 pitchers who have pitched at least 800 innings in their careers, Billy Wagner has been the toughest to hit (6.08 hits per 9 IP). Prior to 2008, before Wagner hit the 800-inning mark, Herb Score held the record (6.39)!

Of pitchers who've pitched at least 2,000 innings, Nolan Ryan (6.56) was the toughest to hit, with Sandy Koufax (6.79), Andy Messersmith (6.94), Hoyt Wilhelm (7.02), Sam McDowell (7.04), and Pedro Martinez (7.07) following him. Do some of those names surprise you?
